Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP)

The FSWEP is the primary vehicle through which federal departments and agencies recruit students for some
7,000 temporary student jobs each year.

FSWEP gives full-time secondary school, CÉGEP, college, technical institute and university students:

  • fair and equal access to student jobs offered by the Public Service of Canada;
  • opportunities to learn about the federal government and gain valuable experience while developing and improving their employability skills.

There is no deadline for applying to the general inventory. However, certain departments hire students earlier than others.

How Does FSWEP Work?

The core of the program is a computerized national inventory of students seeking a job with the federal government. This inventory is administered by the Public Service Commission (PSC) of Canada.

  • hiring departments offering student jobs submit a request to the PSC;
  • a search is conducted based on departmental requirements, i.e., year/level of education, field of study (for post-secondary level only) and skills;
  • the computerized system identifies all the students meeting the search criteria and establishes the list randomly;
  • the PSC contacts the selected candidates by email or by phone to check their interest and availability;
  • the PSC normally refers five names for each job opportunity;
  • hiring departments must assess the referred candidates based on their resumes and/or an interview (by phone or in person). They must also inform all referred candidates of the final results of the process.

Please note: Federal departments and agencies within the broad Public Service, including those not governed by the Public Service Employment Act (PSEA), referred to as separate employers can use the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) to hire students. The student bridging mechanism is only available to students hired by those departments and agencies governed by the PSEA or federal organizations (including separate employers), such as Parks Canada, with signed reciprocity agreements. Student Bridging is not currently available to either the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) or the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

If you are interested in learning about employment opportunities with CRA and/or CFIA (both of which are separate employers), please visit the following links:
