The Ecological Gifts Program is national in scope, and is administered by a National Secretariat located at Environment Canada's headquarters in Gatineau, Quebec. Although the program's requirements apply across Canada, several differences exist among provinces.
Some provinces–Ontario, Quebec, PEI and New Brunswick–have specific requirements for ecological sensitivity that must be fulfilled before a property can be certified. Most regions also have authorities who have been designated to act on behalf of the Federal Minister of the Environment in certain instances, including certifying property as ecologically sensitive. For more information, click on National and Provincial Ecosensitivity Criteria.
In addition to the national environmental charities that have been approved to receive ecological gifts, each province also has its own list of approved environmental charities that operate solely within its jurisdiction.
In order to impart this specific information, ecogift coordinators in each of the Department's five regions serve as the single window through which all donors enter and exit the program. These coordinators have a specialized knowledge of land and donations in their region, and have copies of all program publications and applications.
