Correct terms regarding tax returns

March 5, 1999

Please use correct terms regarding filing of tax returns

Recently, several news reports have stated that tax returns can be e-mailed to Revenue Canada. This is not correct and may confuse the public.

Please note the distinction between e-mail, EFILE and TELEFILE:

  • Canadians cannot as yet use regular e-mail to transmit their tax returns to Revenue Canada through the Internet. Revenue Canada is testing this type of transmission in a pilot project for its employees this year.
  • It is possible to transmit a return electronically using EFILE, but this must be done through approved EFILE service providers, such as accountants or tax preparers.
  • TELEFILE, which has been a national program since last year, lets individuals file a completed income tax return by telephone free of charge. About 8 million clients, who have straightforward tax implications, have been invited to use TELEFILE this year.

Please ensure that these terms are used correctly in future news reports.
