Following a 30-minute meeting in which the Mayor and Prime Minister discussed several issues including arts and culture, social housing, innovations in drug policy, and the 2010 Games, Mayor Sullivan presented a custom-made pine beetle wood box containing Olympic and Paralympic flags. Also in attendance at the meeting were David Emerson, Minister for International Trade and Minister for the Pacific Gateway and the Vancouver-Whistler Olympics; MP James Moore, Parliamentary Secretary to Minister Emerson; and Councillor Elizabeth Ball. "It is an honour to be the first Mayor to meet with Prime Minister Harper in his office," said Mayor Sullivan. "Today we are building on the strong relationship between the Government of Canada and the City of Vancouver, and I'm very pleased to recognize our partnership in hosting the world in 2010." "It has been a pleasure to meet Mayor Sullivan and to receive this gift which symbolizes our shared goal of hosting a spectacular Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games," the Prime Minister said. "2010 will be a chance to showcase not only Vancouver and British Columbia, but all of Canada to the world." Today's meeting with the Prime Minister caps off a busy two days of meetings with several Ministers and MPs, in which the Mayor discussed more than 30 issues of importance to Vancouver. He also attended Question Period in the House of Commons today, and yesterday attended the Holocaust Memorial Ceremony on Parliament Hill. "Being present for the national memorial ceremony for the victims of the Holocaust was a great honour, and a moment that I will always remember," said Mayor Sullivan. ** Photos are available upon request.
