The Honourable Diane Finley recognizes International Youth Day

August 14, 2006

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OTTAWA - The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, recognized International Youth Day on August 12 as a day to raise awareness of our country’s youth and their important contribution to Canada .

International Youth Day was first proclaimed by the United Nation in 1999 to celebrate the contributions that young people – ages 15 to 24 – make in society, and to promote awareness of the challenges young people face.

“Our youth are Canada ’s future, and we recognize the importance of ensuring they have the opportunities to grow and prosper,” said Minister Finley. “Our Government is committed to providing young Canadians with these opportunities to become contributing members within their communities.”

Canada ’s new Government of Canada offers a broad range of services to help young Canadians develop skills, find jobs, gain valuable work experience and stay employed. There is a range of initiatives offered under three programs: Skills Link helps young people who face barriers to employment gain employability skills to get a job; Summer Work Experience helps secondary and post-secondary students find summer jobs; and Career Focus helps post-secondary graduates develop advanced skills and find careers within their field.

“Our Government is committed to improving opportunities for youth as part of an ongoing effort to create a strong and productive workforce,” added Minister Finley.

Service Canada provides Canadians with one-stop, easy-to-access personalized service. It brings Government of Canada programs and services together in a single delivery network to meet the needs of Canadians, wherever they live. Canadians can access services however they choose, by phone through the 1 800 O-Canada line, by internet at servicecanada.gc.ca, by mail or in person.
