18th Annual Environmental Lawyers in Government Conference - 2006

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is with pleasure that the Quebec Regional Office of Justice Canada and Environment Canada Legal Services invite you to attend the 18th Annual Conference of Environmental Lawyers in Government which will take place at the Nouvel Hôtel, Montreal from September 25 to September 28.

This year, the conference theme is "Today's Emerging Legal Issues". Enclosed, please find the conference program and registration form. As you will note, the various issues include criminal law and the environment, civil liability of the Crown, evaluation of environmental damages and Aboriginal law. Louis-Gilles Francoeur, a journalist specializing in environmental law, will open the conference and speak on the topic of public participation in environmental assessment. The Honourable Judge Charles Gonthier (retired) will be the guest of honour at the banquet on September 27. He will speak on "The Role of the Courts, Judges and Lawyers in Environmental Law and Sustainable Development".

The registration fee includes, among others, simultaneous translation, the documentation, continental breakfasts, refreshments and coffee/health breaks and a guided tour of either the Botanical Gardens of Montreal or the Biosphere of Montreal.

A block of rooms has been reserved at the Nouvel Hotel until August 25th for conference participants. Please reserve your room ($149 a night) at your earliest possible convenience at (514) 931-8841.

For all questions about the conference or accommodation, please contact Mr. Ronald Hamelin by telephone at (613) 995-9036 or by e-mail at: envconference@justice.gc.ca

We hope that you will profit from this invitation by being among those who will attend the conference to exchange views on emerging legal issues and to expand your network of government environmental lawyers.

Yours truly,

The conference committee
