The Department visual

The Research and Statistics Division provides a core research capacity that delivers high quality social science research and statistical services to the Department of Justice Canada and the Government of Canada to support evidence-based decision making within a justice context.

The Division is staffed by social science researchers drawn from a broad range of disciplines including law, criminology, sociology, anthropology, education, statistics, political science, social work.

Our key areas of work are:

Access to Justice and Legal Aid
Research that focuses on criminal and civil legal aid issues and other aspects of access to justice (such as Public Legal Education and information and court worker services).
Criminal Justice Research
Research that focuses on criminal justice issues and advances research on issues relating to the Canadian Criminal Code.
Inclusive Justice Research
Research that focuses on the social inclusion of all Canadians in our justice system to ensure all voices are heard, some of which have been historically disadvantaged.
Statistical and Environmental Analysis
Research statistical, methodological, and environmental scanning and analysis services.
Family, Children and Youth
Research focussing on marriage and divorce, family dissolution processes, and outcomes at family breakup, such as child support, and custody and access. As well, the Division undertakes research on children and youth in various aspects of the criminal justice system.
