3D Research and Heritage Preservation
Using NRC's 3D laser scanner, a researcher scans the Grotta dei Cervi at Porto Badisco, Italy. This neolithic cave is an impressive example of rock painting, with more than 3,000 pictograms. Although the cave is closed to the public because of its fragility, it won't be hidden from view – the NRC team, collaborating with researchers from Italy's Lecce University, is creating an accurate 3D model of the cave and its paintings for a virtualized reality system. This NRC-patented technology was also used by NASA to ensure the safe re-entry of the Discovery space shuttle in 2005.
