GPI Research Associateship

NRC's Research Associate (RA) Program provides promising scientists and engineers with the opportunity to work in a challenging research environment during the early stages of their career. Applicants are selected competitively and must demonstrate the ability to perform original, high-quality research in their chosen field.

We are currently recruiting a Research Associate to provide scientific support to the design and development of the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI). GPI consists of an integral field spectrograph that is coupled with a very high-order adaptive optics system and a coronagraph to directly image planets and faint structures around other stars on the Gemini 8-metre telescope. GPI is now entering its preliminary design stage and its first light at the telescope is scheduled for late 2010. NRC-HIA is a major partner in the collaborative design and development of this instrument.

This position requires a Ph.D. in astronomy (or in a related field) plus experience in conducting scientific research related to extra-solar planets; observational experience at large optical telescopes, including the use of adaptive optics systems and/or high-contrast imaging instruments; experience in reduction of data obtained with large optical telescopes. Experience with adaptive optics, coronography and/or instrumentation development will be considered a strong asset.

The deadline for applications is 15 November 2006. To be eligible, applicants must have received their Ph.D. no earlier than 2002.

We offer a highly competitive salary and benefits package.
