YEAR ROUND SCHOOL PROGRAMS 2006-2007

INTERMEDIATE AND SENIOR PROGRAMS

Ecosystems and Agriculture
Grades 7 to 10 (Ontario)
Secondary 1 to 4 (Quebec)
$4 per student
Duration: 2 hours

Try your hand at solving some tricky agricultural issues as you trace the evolution of agriculture and its impact on ecosystems. Explore modern farming practices in pork and beef production and crop protection. Learn about sustainable agriculture while analyzing different alternatives to pesticides. (A-17)

Genetics and Selective Breeding
Grades 9 and up (Ontario)
Secondary 3 and up (Quebec)
$4 per student
Duration: 2 hours

Be a dairy cow evaluator! Good genes are the single most important consideration for a dairy farmer. Analyze the physical traits of one of our cows. Fill out her “report card” and establish her weakest trait, then improve on this characteristic in her offspring by selecting the best bull from a breeder’s catalogue. Predict the genetic outcome of this cross and compare your answer to her actual records. (A-18)
