LOST AND FOUND SOUND: SUMMERHILL
Duration: 00:18:28 | |
In this edition of Lost and Found Sound, we go back to a tragedy that devasted a small Nova Scotia town... (CLIP) Seventy-five men were killed in that 1958 "Bump." Many of those who survived were buried underground, some for up to eight days. In this rebroadcast from October, Shelagh Rogers speaks with Chris Murphy, the brother of Peter Murphy of Antigonish, Nova Scotia. While helping his mother move, Peter came across a box full of reel-to-reel tapes and typed transcripts. After a closer look, he realized they belonged to his father, Doctor Noel Murphy. In 1958, Doctor Murphy had just graduated from medical school. His specialty was psychiatry. One of the first jobs he took, required that he go to Springhill only days after the mining disaster. That is when these tapes were made. Shelagh spoke with Chris Murphy, while listening to the sounds of the Springhill Mining Disaster... |
