How to Do Genealogy

Genealogy is a wonderful hobby and can rapidly become an obsession. Many books and archival records provide information on ancestors. You can discover those sources in our sections Sources by Topic and Sources by Place.

The Canadian Genealogy Centre also offers advice to help you in your efforts. You will be able to find out about research methods and the main sources of genealogical information and learn how to gather information and where to go to do your research.

Genealogy is a lifelong learning process. You do not need to know everything right away. If you need help while doing your research, you have many choices. Thanks to their vast experience, genealogical societies can be very helpful. Some of them organize courses, seminars and workshops to familiarize genealogists with research methods and the documentation and to teach them how to work efficiently.

If you want to learn more, specialized courses in genealogy are available.
