Restricted records may not be consulted by researchers without written permission from the fonds creator or legal heirs.  To facilitate the consultation process, the Music Division recommends that researchers make appointments.

  8. Copyright:
The Division does not hold the copyright to the records in its custody.  The researcher must therefore comply with the Copyright Act R.S.C. 1985, c. C-42.

  9. Microforms:
Microform readers are available to patrons.

  10. Audio and video records:
The National Library does not play original archival sound and video recordings for patrons.  Consultation copies are made for in-house use by patrons, and the reading room is equipped with two audiovisual stations where researchers may consult these recordings.  When a consultation copy has been created, it is normally indicated in the finding aid.  If a consultation copy does not exist, one must be created.  At least six weeks' notice must be given if a patron wishes to consult an item in the collection for which a consultation copy has not yet been created.  Requests for the creation of new consultation copies are limited to 10 hours of recording per quarter year per patron to a total of 40 hours per patron per year.  The staff may prohibit the reproduction of certain recordings because of their condition.  It may not be possible to produce consultation copies of certain formats.
