What is the FMI?

What is the FMI?

The FMI maps out the landscape for managing information in the Government of Canada (GoC) and provides authoritative, comprehensive, and integrated guidance.  The FMI:

  • Provides a vision, goals and principles for the management of information
  • Links obligations and accountabilities to legislation and policy direction
  • Provides governance and accountability models
  • Provides guidance in support of the full range of GoC activities: preparing information products and services for external and internal clients, program and service delivery, desktop tasks, and information management services

Why is the FMI needed?

Why is the FMI needed?

  • To describe information's critical role in government activities and the importance of managing it well
  • To inform GoC employees of their obligations and responsibilities in managing information
  • To provide a single source of clear direction and practical guidance for managing information in the GoC
  • To provide tools and techniques to enable management of information as a valued resource, information sharing, access and use, interoperability and common approaches, subject to legal requirements
  • To assist in the development of IM community capacity to support service delivery

Who is the target audience of the FMI?

The FMI is intended for:

  • All persons working for GoC in the fulfilment of day-to-day activities including leadership, management and administrative activities
  • Senior managers, directors, and managers responsible for program and
    service delivery
  • Information management advisors and specialists

When to Use the FMI

When to Use the FMI?

  • For information on obligations and responsibilities in managing information in day-to-day activities
  • In support of program and project (re)designs and delivery
  • For guidance on a specific information management topic
  • As a reference to monitor, assess and audit government management of information responsibilities
  • In the preparation of training programs for GoC employees
  • In the preparation of awareness campaigns
