Help - General Navigation
Every page on the Chief Information Officer (CIO) web site shares a common look and feel CLF
. This ensures that you can easily navigate the different services without getting confused by the layout.
The help page will help you to navigate.
Page Structure |
 |
Each page has the same layout.
|
|
 |
|
|
The header is the same on all pages and allows quick and easy access to the
CIOB services. Each
page starts with the Federal Identity Program (FIP) Identifier and is
followed by the header/menu bar. There are three levels that
form part of the header/menu bar:
Federal Identity Program (FIP) Identifier

The federal identifier is placed on every page of the Web and serves to
identify a Government of Canada web site as indicated in the
CLF standard 2.1. There a three parts that form the Federal Identity Program (FIP)
identifier:
- the flag:
the flag symbol is used to identify all departments, agencies,
corporations, commissions, boards, councils, and other federal bodies and activities, unless they
are authorized to be identified by the Coat of Arms.
- the institutional signature: the FIP
signature is the combination of a symbol and the bilingual applied
title. Also referred to as the corporate signature.
- the Government of Canada signature or the
"Canada" wordmark:
the "Canada" wordmark is the brand identifier of the Government
of Canada and is used in association with the appropriate FIP signature
The Common Menu Bar serves to facilitate navigation through and between GoC sites and is part of the Commmon Look and Feel
(CLF) Standard 6.1. The common menu bar ensures users have direct access to
five key functions (language choice, contact information, help, search engines,
and a link to the Canada Site or Publiservice), from any page on any government site.
Navigation to the subsequent levels enables you to access content at the
departmental level and then at the Branch level.

There are four different types of sidebars:
|
|
|
 |
1) Common Sidebar
The Left Common Sidebar is displayed on the Home page and on the main
navigation pages. Each web site has its own common sidebar. On the sidebar you are also able to
navigate your way up the hierarchy to the highest level, the
CIOB.This
enables you to quickly move between various sections of
the web you are in and to the various
CIOB webs. These are
considered vertical bread crumbs. Certain navigation pages contain a sidebar that expands and collapses when the
main item is clicked on (the expandable items are sometimes in a white
background).
|
|
|
 |
2) Sidebar Boxes
The Sidebar Boxes are also displayed on the Home page and on the main
navigation pages. These boxes can either be placed on the left or right of the
screen with the Personalize Display
Option. There are five boxes which help you retrieve information:

|
|
 |
3) Document Sidebar
The document sidebar is used for a multi-page document. It looks
similar to a common sidebar because it also enables you to
navigate your way up the hierarchy to the highest level, the
CIOB. Each document
has its unique sidebar which lists the main sections of the document
similar to a table of contents. This enables you to quickly jump between various sections of
the document you are in and to other
CIOB webs.
Certain documents contain a sidebar that expands and collapses when the
main item is clicked on (the expandable items are sometimes in a white
background). The "Return" button allows you to exit the
document and return to the page you started with.
|
|
|
 |
4) Presentation Sidebar
The presentation sidebar is used for a presentation. It looks
similar to a common sidebar because it also enables you to
navigate your way up the hierarchy to the highest level, the
CIOB.
It provides additional navigation features such as:
- the title of the presentation
- the date of the presentation
- the previous and
next page buttons < >
- the first and last page buttons |< >|
- the page number of the slide you are viewing and the total number of
slides
- a return button
which exits the presentation and returns to the page you started with.

of the "Printable Version" icon.

The date indicator informs the users of the three dates which are
defined as follows:
- Created: the discrete date on which the resource was first published (made
available) on the Web.
- Updated: the discrete date on which the information content of the
resource was last substantially modified.
- Reviewed: the date when information content was last reviewed for currency.

Dates are represented in the ISO all-numeric date standard YYYY-MM-DD format.
Because of its positioning at the bottom of the page, the date indicator can also signal
to the users that they have reached the end of that page. The date indicator is part of the
Commmon Look and Feel (CLF) Standard 6.4. |

The "Top of Page" Arrow promptly returns you
