Go for Green Congratulates Canadian Students
for Taking a Healthy Route to School
for International Walk to School Week 2006

International Walk to School Week - logo OTTAWA, November 8, 2006 – Thousands of Canadian students showed their support for active transportation when they took part in International Walk to School Week (October 2-6, 2006). By walking or wheeling to school with parents, school staff and community leaders Canadian children took an important step toward healthier living.

As part of Go for Green’s national Active & Safe Routes to School program in Canada, International Walk to School Week is an annual campaign that promotes the health and environmental benefits of using active transportation to get to and from school. It is an opportunity for kids to learn safe routes to school, and safe pedestrian and cycling skills – all while having lots of fun!!

Organizers in 38 countries around the globe work hard each year to deliver this event and to encourage higher levels of daily physical activity and reduce air pollution and traffic congestion around schools. More Canadian schools than ever took part this year by registering their participation online at www.asrts.ca!

To thank schools for participating in this event, Go for Green offers National Walk to School Awards. Winning schools will receive a banner, educational games and incentives for their students. Go for Green is proud to recognize the following schools as winners of this year’s National Walk to School Week:

Chief Albert Wright, Tulita, Northwest Territories

Carlyle Elementary School, Carlyle, Saskatchewan

Marion Bridge Elementary, Marion Bridge, Nova Scotia

Connaught Street School, Fredericton, New Brunswick

Darwin School, Winnipeg, Manitoba

Hillside Community School, Grande Prairie, Alberta

École St-Roch, St-Roch, Quebec

“Go for Green is very pleased with the successes of International Walk to School Week 2006 in Canada” said Johanne Lacombe, National Executive Director of Go for Green. “We would like to acknowledge our national, provincial/territorial and local partners for their remarkable efforts in making this event possible!”

Originally a one-day celebration, the initiative has grown to become International Walk to School Week. Schools can choose the day to participate, or they can celebrate a whole week of walking to school. In fact, iwalk, the international body of this initiative, has declared the month of October as Walk to School Month.

In Canada, the event is coordinated nationally by Go for Green in collaboration with the following provincial/territorial organizations: Recreation and Parks Association of the Yukon, Way to Go! School Program in British Columbia; SHAPE in Alberta; Resource Conservation Manitoba; Green Communities Canada in Ontario; Vélo Québec; Ecology Action Centre in Nova Scotia and Go for Green’s 13 provincial/territorial board members.

New Active Transportation Presenters
in Saskatchewan!

On September 16, Go for Green conducted its very first workshop to train Active Transportation presenters. Held in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, nine people from across the province: Regina, Saskatoon, North Battleford, La Ronge: completed the session.

From left to right starting in the back: Marnie Sinclair, Kelly Groyer,
Joaleen Szeles, Cathy Watts,Tami Denomie
Sitting in front: Sara Toth, Michelle Dyck, Cynthia Tymoruski.

This one-day seminar was held immediately after the Saskatoon Community Active Transportation Workshop, which was conducted on September 14th and 15th. Most of the participants to the Presenter's Workshop also attended the Saskatoon Community session.

During the training on the 16th, the new presenters reviewed the components of the community workshop and how these worked together to provide a complete outline for the participating district. Particular emphasis was paid on who should attend a community AT workshop, and dealing with the objections that are often raised to providing improved AT infrastructure.

Each of the participants to the Presenter's Workshop received a package of information that included all the background materials and PowerPoint presentations associated with Go for Green's initiative "Planning AT Community workshops".

The AT Presenter's training was held at the request of and with assistance from Saskatchewan in motion, an association that promotes increasing physical activity for health benefits in that province, and five of the participants were their staff.

Congratulations and welcome to
the "Planning AT Community Presenters" club!!!

Together we can do something about it!
Go for Green wants all Canadians to get active and care for the environments in which they live, work, and play.
