Water resource economics concerns the allocation and demand for water resources. The overall aim of this field is to assure current and future water uses are met in the most economically efficient manner possible. The field is stongly linked to that of water use and water conservation or efficiency. Issues and subjects examined can include: the collection of data and information on water use and pricing in both the municipal and the industrial sectors of the Canadian economy; the analysis of demand patterns and the factors that influence them; the forecasting of national, regional, and basin level trends; the application of full cost pricing principles to issues of municipal infrastructure; exploration of water demand management and conservation options for water development; and the examination of the willingness of Canadians to pay to assure adequate water services.
