Citizens and Society - Youth
Pollution prevention (P2) is about preventing the creation of waste at the source rather than cleaning it up after it has been produced. The emphasis is on avoiding the creation of waste in the first place. There are many simple and easy changes that youth can make in their lifestyle to practice P2. Using reusable lunch containers rather than disposable materials like plastic wrap is one possible opportunity. Opting to use alternative modes of transportation including public transit, cycling, or walking contributes to reducing the production of greenhouse gas emissions, the leading cause of climate change. Also, choosing leisure activities that have less of an impact on the environment helps to prevent pollution. Examples could include skiing instead of snowmobiling, or rollerblading rather than four-wheeling. Making environmentally-responsible choices will help to protect the environment and ensure that our environment is sustainable for years to come.
Youth have a very important role to play in educating the people around them. By sharing their knowledge with family and friends it will make P2 a reality in their lives.
