ResourcesBeijing +5
Beijing +5 at a GlanceThe Fourth World Conference on Women was held in Beijing in September 1995. Member states of the United Nations agreed on a political declaration and Platform for Action committing themselves to action on a broad range of issues to promote women's equality. The United Nations General Assembly Special Session, "Women 2000: Gender Equality, Development and Peace for the 21st Century," convened from June 5 to 10, 2000 at United Nations headquarters in New York, with the adoption by consensus of a Political Declaration and Outcomes document on "Further Actions and Initiatives to implement the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action" (PFA). The objective of the Special Session was to review and assess progress achieved and to consider future actions for further implementation of the Nairobi Forward-looking Strategies for the Advancement of Women, adopted in 1985, and the Beijing Platform for Action adopted at the 1995 Fourth United Nations World Conference on Women in Beijing. Canada and Beijing +5Status of Women Canada (SWC) coordinated the Government of Canada's preparations for the United Nations Special Session "Women 2000: Gender Equality, Development and Peace for the 21st Century". In co-operation with the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, SWC was also responsible for coordinating the participation of all federal departments in Canadian activities related to Beijing +5 and in international meetings leading up to the June 2000 UN Special Session.
