Awards and DistinctionsBest Web Site: Non-Profit or CharityIn October, the Virtual Museum of Canada exhibit entitled Horizons: Canadian and Russian Landscape Painting (1860-1940) was awarded the “Best Web Site: Non-Profit or Charity” at the 2004 Digital Marketing Awards. This virtual exhibit allows visitors to explore 250 breathtaking paintings, brought together for the first time, from the collections of 14 prestigious galleries. 2003 Golden MIM Award WinnerIn April, the VMC received the prestigious Golden MIM Award given out by the Marché International du Multimédia. This award recognizes the VMC as the winner in the “best portal category: site intended to promote or present products or services for a target audience or a community of interest.” 2002 MUSE Award WinnerIn May, the VMC received the prestigious MUSE silver award given out by the American Association of Museums, Media and Technology Committee for a Collection Database/Reference Resource. The award recognizes the VMC's outstanding ability to integrate and make easily accessible large amounts of information on a variety of subjects. Head of the Public Service AwardTo cap off 2001, the VMC received the Head of the Public Service Award in the category of "Excellence in Service Delivery". The award recognizes the gateway's success in facilitating access to online museum content. Best Information Web SiteIn November 2001, a "Best Information Web Site" Certificate was awarded to the VMC gateway at the 2001 Digital Marketing Awards. The category rewards sites that excel in the delivery of product or service information/data. Library & Catalog Management Solution AwardAlso in November, the VMC received the "Library & Catalog Management Solution Award" at Livelinkup 2001, an international gathering of information technology specialists. The award recognizes solutions that protect and leverage intellectual assets. Gold Medal for Unique AchievementFor nearly a decade, the Technology in Government Distinction Awards have celebrated major Canadian achievements in the management of information and technology in the public sector. The "Gold Medal for Unique Achievement" was awarded to the VMC in October, 2001. Site of the MonthThe Beaver, Canada's history magazine, chose the VMC as its "Web Site of the Month" for June and July 2001. The publication says the gateway has "excellent eyeball and eardrum appeal," and offers "more delights than appears at first sight, or even several sights later." Site du moisThe June/July edition of Guide Internet profiled the VMC as its Site of the Month. The French-language magazine, which is published out of Montreal, gives the VMC a "Five Star - Add immediately to your bookmarks" rating, lauding this content-rich gateway for appealing to Internet surfers of all ages. Canadian History Best of the NetIn August 2001, the About.com portal granted the VMC with a "Canadian History Best of the Net Award". The distinction recognizes the efforts made by Canadian museums to raise awareness of our past through the Internet. Site du JourThe French-language version of the Sympatico.ca portal has twice made a VMC exhibit its "Site of the Day". The chosen productions are The Memory Collection and Sable Island: A Story of Survival. Pick of the WeekPanoramas: The North American Landscape in Art became a "Yahoo!
Pick of the Week" in April 2001. An Internet first, this virtual
exhibit is the fruit of an official trilateral initiative involving
Canadian, U.S. and Mexican heritage institutions.
