Acknowledgements
Anyone arriving at the Virtual Museum of Canada soon realizes they are witnessing an enormous undertaking. First announced by the Government of Canada in the 1999 Speech from the Throne, the VMC is a pan-Canadian initiative that involves heritage institutions from every corner of the country.
Canada's virtual museum community
Canadians rely on museums to help them better understand their country, their communities, themselves. Fifty-five million people visit Canada's museums every year! They know firsthand how these attractions enlighten and delight. With the VMC, heritage institutions are now joining forces to reach an even larger audience with their innovative and exciting content. Linked together through a shared vision and their membership in CHIN, they are the heart and soul of this revolutionary gateway.
Canadian Heritage Information Network (CHIN)
The executive producer of the VMC is a federal agency that has served the museum community since 1972. From its inception, CHIN has contributed to the development of the tools and expertise that heritage professionals need to take full advantage of emerging technologies. With the Web's popularization, CHIN and its members were given an exceptional opportunity to promote Canada's heritage by drawing on their accumulated know-how. The technology wizards, professional dreamers, marketing gurus and service superstars at CHIN have been instrumental in helping museums turn the VMC concept into reality.
The Canadian Museums Association (CMA)
The CMA is the national organization for the advancement of the Canadian museum community. It has actively participated in the development of the VMC, its most visible contribution being the more than 2,000 entries found in the Official Directory of Museums and Related Institutions. The CMA's cooperation and generosity have made the VMC's Find a Museum a comprehensive and complete resource.
