Olympic Ceremonies

The main ceremonies surrounding the Olympic Games are the opening and closing ceremonies. The organizers of the Games draw on their incredible ingenuity to produce exceptional celebrations that will be indelibly imprinted in the memory of every spectator. Established by the Olympic Charter, the protocol for the ceremonies ensures that they have a unique presentation, setting them apart from any other international sporting event. The ceremonies make it possible for all cultures to find their place at the Olympic Games.

All cultures can find their place at the Olympic Games...

Although there have been opening ceremonies since the very beginning of the Games, in 1896, several elements of the ceremony, which today are part of the tradition, were added over the years. Organizers must follow a set protocol, but this does not prevent the organizing countries from making certain adaptations and innovations for the ceremonies.
