This week's Hot Sites selected by our
History & Government Division
With holiday celebrations well underway, we thought it would be fun to take a look at how Canadians have celebrated Christmas in the past. Several websites present images of Canadians' celebrations both here at home and overseas.
The Canadian Museum of Civilization includes a set of photographs showing members of the Canadian Arctic Expedition celebrating Christmas in Collinson Point, Alaska in 1913.
Once you've finished your own shopping, have a look at the Museum's collection of Eaton's Christmas Catalogues from the 19th and 20th centuries, to see what people were buying as gifts in years past.
CBC Archives presents an account of Canadian soldiers eating Christmas dinner at the war front during World War II.
You might also enjoy Much Ado About Christmas, a collection of CBC radio and television clips of Toys, Traditions and Holiday Fun from the 1930's to the early 21st century.
From Library and Archives Canada comes a collection of digitized images of Special Editions of Canadian Newspapers including many Christmas supplements from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Images Canada provides access to the digitized collections of photos, cartoons and artwork from libraries, archives and other institutions from across the country. Enter Christmas in the search box and view some of the more than 700 images (including cartoons by the incomparable Len Norris) of Christmas in Canada.
To see how we celebrated Christmas here in BC, try searching for Christmas in the photographic databases of the British Columbia Archives, the City of Vancouver Archives, and our very own Special Collections Division.
Happy Holidays, Everyone!
