Alberta InSight is a growing database of over 20 000 photographs held in archival institutions throughout the province of Alberta. Most of the photographs are from the first half of the twentieth century, although there are some more recent ones as well. There are significant numbers of photographs that relate to buildings, family and personal life, transportation, sports and recreation, as well as a variety of other topics. Partners include:

Canada Aviation Museum
The Canadian Aviation Museum Digital Archives consists of mostly black and white images dating from the earliest days of heavier-than-air flight to the present day. The collection is especially rich in photographs dating from the 1930s and 1940s, and includes many rare and vivid images of the early bush planes and the aircraft of the Royal Flying Corps in the 1910s.

CN Images of Canada Gallery
The Canada Science and Technology Museum/Canadian National (CSTM/CN) photograph collection contains about 750 000 images which date from the mid-nineteenth century to the mid 1980s. Originally held by the Public Affairs Department of Canadian National, at the company's headquarters in Montréal, these images record the history and activities of CN and its predecessor companies, including the Canadian Northern, Intercolonial and Grand Trunk railways. This collection documents a rapidly developing Canada, as seen from a great variety of social perspectives -- wilderness trekking, cities rising from the empty prairie, travel by land and by sea, industries in the making, Canadians marching to war, and the opening up of northern mineral wealth, to name just a few -- recording a unique portrait of Canada and Canadians over time and across North America.

City of Calgary, Corporate Records, Archives
City of Calgary, Corporate Records, Archives, located in Calgary, Alberta, houses approximately 500 000 historical photographs from the Corporation of The City of Calgary and from private agencies with direct links to the Corporation, such as the organizing committee for the XV Olympic Winter Games. Now, 3400 of these images are available through Images Canada.
Besides photographs from OCO'88, the organizing committee for the 1988 Calgary Olympics, these images include those from city departments and business units, such as the Parks & Recreation Department, the Traffic Operations Department and the Engineering Department. The dates of our images range from 1882 to 1995, but date predominantly from 1948 to 1989 and document many core municipal government activities such as urban development, construction projects, city facilities and members of city council.

Geological Survey of Canada Photo Gallery
Our photo gallery contains a variety of digitized images representative of the diversity found among the 520 000 negatives in the photo collection of the Geological Survey of Canada. Numbers associated with the images are those assigned to the original negatives. The selection has been made from both historical and modern photographs relating to surveys and studies carried out by Survey scientists during the course of its 150-year history. The collection includes portraits, historical photos, photos of gems, rock specimens and fossils, landscapes and photos of geoscientists at work. The digitization of selected photographs is an ongoing project, which can be viewed at the Geological Survey of Canada Photo Gallery site.

Glenbow Archives Photos
The Glenbow Archives, located in Calgary, Alberta, houses over 100 000 historical photographs of the Canadian West, 50 000 of which are now available via the Images Canada Gateway and the Glenbow Archives Photographs site.
The photographs, which have been acquired by Glenbow over the past 44 years, date predominantly from 1871, when the first photograph of what is now the Province of Alberta was taken, to the 1970s. The images document the people, landscape and development of the West, and include such topics as First Nations (especially Blackfoot), Métis, Mounted Police, missionaries, the City of Calgary (including the Calgary Stampede), Riel rebellions, pioneer life, agriculture, ranching, cowboys, railways (particularly the Canadian Pacific Railway), the petroleum industry and the Rocky Mountains. The collection is particularly rich in historical photographs of Calgary and southern Alberta.
Halton Images
The Halton Images collection depicts people, places and events in developing towns and communities during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Contributed by members of a diverse group including historical societies, museums, libraries and individuals, the images reflect moments and milestones in the region's history.

Canadian Illustrated News
The Canadian Illustrated News site is a selection of almost 4000 images of people, places and events across Canada and around the world taken from the popular 19th-century magazine. Canadian Illustrated News was published in Montréal, Quebec by George Desbarats from 1869 to 1883 and was notable for its innovative use of half-tone photographs.
Early Images of Canada: Illustrations from Rare Books contains 550 illustrations, mostly engravings, from Library and Archives Canada's Rare Book Collection. All of the images are taken from books, often exploration or missionary narratives, published before the year 1800. These particular images have been selected because they depict geography that is now part of Canada or events that are significant in Canadian history.

Historic Niagara Digital Collections
The Historic Niagara Digital Collections includes art works, postcards, photographs, drawings, and other items of a visual nature. The core of the collections (approximately 300 art works and 16,000 other images) come from the holdings of the Niagara Falls Public Library, and is augmented by donations of images from private collections and other institutions. The collection represents all facets of Niagara Falls, from the natural environment and the tourist industry (including daredevils and stunters) to Niagara Falls as a cultural, political, and social community. The images range from the late 18th century to the present.
The Nova Scotia Museum Photograph Collection
The Nova Scotia Museum is a decentralized family of museums operated by the Nova Scotia Department of Tourism and Culture. The Nova Scotia Museum Image Collection contains over 100 000 photographs, postcards and illustrations depicting the natural and cultural heritage of Nova Scotia and the Atlantic region of Canada. These photographs have been collected by the Nova Scotia Museum over the past 135 years. Images from the collections of the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic (Halifax), Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History (Halifax), Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic (Lunenburg), Nova Scotia Museum of Cultural History (Halifax) and Sherbrooke Village Museum (Sherbrooke) have been included. The collection contains historical and modern photographs of people, places, events, objects and the natural history of Nova Scotia, as well as images of relevance to Nova Scotia.
Significant portions of the collection document maritime and fisheries history, agricultural and industrial history, and the diverse species, habitats, geology and landscapes of Nova Scotia and the Atlantic region. Portions of several collections have been digitized and made available online. Featured topics include First Nations (Mi'kmaq), early life in Nova Scotia, architecture, wildlife (especially wildflowers), shipwrecks and fisheries history.

Editorial Cartoons Collection
The Simon Fraser University Library Editorial Cartoons Collection aims to
make all of the editorial cartoons held by the library available on the
World Wide Web. Currently, the library holds approximately 2200 cartoons
by Len Norris, Roy Peterson, and other Canadian cartoonists. The library
has digitized over 1200 of these cartoons, and by the fall of 2002 will
have digitized the remainder.
The Editorial Cartoons Collection of Canadian cartoonists represents one
of Simon Fraser University Library's most distinctive holdings. The
material's value as a social, political and cultural documentary since the
1950s is immeasurable. By providing online access to this material, Simon
Fraser University Library can share this invaluable resource with children and adults who are unable to visit Simon Fraser University to see the originals.

de Jourdan's Studio Collection
The de Jourdan's Studio Collection dates from 1926 to 1951. Most of the images are from the years 1926 to 1944, with fewer images for the years 1945 to 1951. The collection consists of approximately 4 400 well-identified black and white negatives in various sizes. The predominant size of the negatives is 6 cm x 7 cm. The collection is composed of two main elements: 95 percent are studio portrait images, while the remainder can be classified as commercial work. The physical condition of the images, including image quality and density, is generally good.
The collection is significant for a number of reasons. First of all, the people portrayed in the portrait work are largely ordinary men and women, many obviously immigrants to southern Alberta. The images are, in many cases, the only record of their lives here. Secondly, although only 5 percent of the collection, the commercial work is of considerable research value. Buildings and businesses (including interiors), streetscapes, leisure activities, agricultural scenes and important community events are all represented. Finally, the de Jourdan's Studio, itself, is significant because it has been owned and operated by the de Jourdan family, in the same location, since the day that Pierre de Jourdan established his business in Lethbridge, in 1921. Mr. Patrick de Jourdan is the third generation of his family to serve Lethbridge and southern Alberta.
Arthur Rafton-Canning [British & Colonial Photographic Company] -- 1907 to 1912 -- Public Domain
The images of Arthur Rafton-Canning are located throughout the archives' holdings. They have come to the archives in a number of different donations. They number approximately 1 500 photographs and negatives, in a variety of sizes and formats, including silver-salt prints, postcards and glass plate negatives.
Arthur Rafton-Canning established the British & Colonial Photographic Company in Lethbridge in 1907, and operated it until 1913 when he moved out of southern Alberta. Those years witnessed the first large economic boom in the city and region, and Rafton-Canning recorded it all. No aspect of life in Lethbridge and southern Alberta escaped his lens. Urban growth, irrigated and dryland agriculture, coal mining, Native people, business, immigration, leisure pursuits and more: Rafton-Canning recorded them all with the skill of a documentary photographer. He returned again and again to the same locations, taking images from the same perspectives to illustrate the changes that occurred over time. Many of his images of Lethbridge are panoramic, taken from vantage points atop water towers and the tallest buildings in the city. For anyone interested in the history of this unique region of western Canada, the photographs of Arthur Rafton-Canning are a priceless research resource.

The Toronto Public Library Digital Collections website brings together a variety of primary and secondary source materials from the Library's collections. This is an ongoing program created to digitally capture and provide electronic access to the Library's rare and special collections via the Internet to further historical research and personal study. The databases include images of atlases, books, directories, maps, pictures, postcards and souvenir pictures.
While the content is primarily related to Toronto, there are also some 4000 pictorial images from across Ontario. Over 5500 images are indexed in the Images Canada gateway and are also available on the TPL website.
University of New Brunswick Libraries
Living, Learning, Working: Gallery of Modern Architecture in Atlantic Canada
The goal of the Living Learning Working (LLW) project is to establish an historical record and build public knowledge of modern architecture in Atlantic Canada. The LLW Gallery is a research database of digital images of post-war buildings designed by Atlantic architects and located in the provinces of New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

Photographs from the Tyrrell collections at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library
“The Barren Lands” digital collection documents two exploratory surveys of the region west of Hudson Bay, in northern Manitoba and Saskatchewan and the area now known as Nunavut. Drawing on materials from the J.B. Tyrrell, James Tyrrell and related collections at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library, it includes the two Barren Lands expeditions of 1893 and 1894 for the Geological Survey of Canada, as well as material on the Hudson Bay Expedition of 1885, and the 1900 survey of the area between Great Slave Lake and Hudson Bay. In addition to the photographs that are included as part of the ImagesCanada gateway, “The Barren Lands” includes over 5000 images from original field notebooks and diaries, correspondence, maps, clippings and published works.
