The Bureau of Canadian Archivists/le Bureau canadiens des archivistes was created in 1976 by the Association of Canadian Archivists (ACA) and the Association des archivistes du Québec (AAQ). The first meeting of the Bureau took place August 28, 1976.

At the start, its mandate was to ensure the coordination of all joint projects submitted to and approved by the Association des archivistes du Québec and the Association of Canadian Archivists. With time, however, the mandate evolved somewhat so that the BCA could recommend joint projects to the Boards of Directors of the two associations. Furthermore, the Bureau acts as representative for the two associations ans represents the archivists of Canada in its dealings with the federal government and Canadian agencies, in particular, since 1985, the Canadian Council of Archives (CCA). Since 1978, the BCA represents the archivists of both national associations at the International Council on Archives (ICA).

Through the years, the Bureau of Canadian Archivists took on several projects, in particular the publication of the Annuaire des dépôts d'archives canadiens. However, the development of standards of description proved to be the Bureau's most visible project.

A first review of the BCA's structure and a request for incorporation were made in 1978. The following year, the members of the AAQ met in general assembly and approved the incorporation. However, the proposal was rejected by the ACA.

The Bureau of Canadian Archivists was incorporated in August 1995.
