Perhaps William Lyon Mackenzie King’s most important renovation was to have Laurier’s billiard room on the third floor made into a library. This was where King did much of his work, preferring it to his office in the Parliament Buildings. The library was central to King’s political and personal life. Much of the nation’s business during King’s years as Prime Minister was carried out here. Aside from visitors on government business and King’s secretaries, only family members, close friends or the rare house guest were invited to this floor. King said of the library : “Anything more entirely satisfying than this library with its environments & equipments - it would be difficult to imagine. It is a great rest, a great delight & a great inspiration”. (March 24, 1923)
