Fisheries and Oceans Canada employee recognized for creating a unique marine geospatial data portal
(Ottawa, September 22, 2004) - In recognition of his outstanding contribution to information resources management, Library and Archives Canada and the Council of Federal Libraries have selected Don Vachon as the winner of the 2004 Agatha Bystram Award for Leadership in Information Management. The Awards ceremony was held at the Government Conference Centre in Ottawa, on the occasion of the Annual Fall Seminar of the Council of Federal Libraries held September 22, 2004.
Mr. Vachon was the key person responsible for the creation of Fisheries and Oceans Canada's GeoPortal, a Web site that provides one-stop access to marine geospatial data and services. Previously, any information pertaining to maps, nautical charts, hydrographic surveys, scientific data and information about Canada's waterways and ecosystems had to be collected from across isolated collections in the department as well as from other public and private organizations.
"Don is already recognized by the International Hydrographic community as one of the best in the area of Technology development," says Michel Poulin, National Program Director at the Canadian Hydrographic Service. "Through the GeoPortal , Don and his team have successfully applied Marine Geomatic Technology so the world can now visualize a wealth of Canadian maritime information. I am particularly proud of this achievement as it contributes the Canadian maritime story not only within the community, but with all Canadians and ultimately the world."

Wilson, Librarian and Archivist of Canada and Chair of the Council of Federal Libraries. "Mr.Vachon should be congratulated for his dedication and commitment to integrating and managing this GeoPortal which has become an enabling technology particularly for marine data collection management and distribution."
A strong honorary mention for the Agatha Bystram Award was also granted to Elizabeth Jorgensen, who has been in charge of Information Management Services for the Department of Canadian Heritage and Parks Canada Agency's Legal Services Unit.
Instituted by the Council of Federal Libraries (CFL) in 1995, the Agatha Bystram Award recognizes the contribution of Agatha Bystram, one of the federal library community's most respected pioneers in the management of federal information. The Award is presented each year to federal government employees who are innovators in the management of federal information resources.
