Library and Archives Canada Holds a Woman's Memory of Her Father
Ottawa, June 7, 2005 - A woman was reunited this week with a memory of her father, thanks to a child's ring now on display at Library and Archives Canada. Ms. Anne Victoria Brown was the little girl whose signet ring was worn by her father, Warrant Officer William Caldwell, with his military identification discs until his death in May 1941.
In 1995, Ms. Brown contacted Library and Archives Canada to obtain information about her father and his family. Archivists retrieved the file and communicated the information they had to Ms. Brown, who, at the time, was living in the United States. However, the identification discs and ring were not discovered until 1999, and attempts to contact Ms. Brown were in vain because she had moved. The artifacts were restored by Library and Archives Canada conservators and safely stored away.
The identification discs and signet ring are now part of a Library and Archives Canada exhibition, entitled Written by War-Canadian Family Stories, 1939-1945. Promotion of the exhibition prompted officials at Library and Archives Canada to contact an investigative reporter who found Ms. Brown, now living in Louisburg, North Carolina.
When exhibition curator Andrew Horrall reached Ms. Brown with the news of the discovery, she was overwhelmed with emotion.. She plans to visit Canada soon to reunite with her father's past.
