Library and Archives Canada Honours Publishing Giant McClelland & Stewart as it Celebrates 100 Years

OTTAWA, June 13, 2006 - In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Canada's premier English publisher, McClelland & Stewart Ltd., Library and Archives Canada proudly presents an exciting new exhibition entitled Promoting Canadian Authors: 100 Years of McClelland & Stewart. The exhibition highlights the company's enormous contribution to Canadian authors and shows how its story parallels the infancy, growth and establishment of Canadian literature.

"As the keeper of Canada's documentary heritage, Library and Archives Canada is proud to join in this anniversary celebration," said Ian E. Wilson, Librarian and Archivist of Canada. "McClelland & Stewart is truly a force in Canadian publishing and a champion of our literary heritage." This must-see exhibition showcases books, manuscripts, photos, artifacts and correspondence provided by the publisher, the McClelland family and the McMaster University Library, as well as various items and publications from the collection of Library and Archives Canada.

From its beginnings as a library supply house in Toronto in 1906, to its establishment of the New Canadian Library, a paperback series of Canadian classics, McClelland & Stewart has more than 5,000 titles to its credit. It remains a strong, vibrant publisher today, publishing 100 books annually.

McClelland & Stewart consistently publishes award-winning titles by many of Canada's most prominent authors, such as Margaret Atwood, Leonard Cohen, Alistair MacLeod, Alice Munro, Michael Ondaatje and Jane Urquhart. Its list of fiction publications represents a who's who in Canadian writing and includes best-selling novels, poetry and children's literature. McClelland & Stewart also publishes non-fiction works that chronicle Canadian history, social issues and culture.

Promoting Canadian Authors: 100 Years of McClelland & Stewart is on view until March 4, 2007, from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily in Exhibition Room D, Library and Archives Canada, Ottawa. Admission is free.
