THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF CANADA TO ACQUIRE THE PERSONAL ARCHIVES OF DOCTORS LUCILLE TEASDALE AND PIERO CORTI

OTTAWA, September 29, 2000 --  The National Archives of Canada is about to acquire the archives of Lucille Teasdale and Piero Corti, an exceptional couple, both physicians, who devoted their lives to the patients of St. Mary’s-Lacor hospital in Gulu, Uganda. The archival collection consists of correspondence, including the letters the couple exchanged before they were married; lists of the surgical operations performed by Lucille Teasdale; photographs taken at the Gulu hospital; medals and plaques for the highest honours awarded to the couple in recognition of their great work and courage; and films.

The official signing ceremony will take place in Montreal in the presence of the National Archivist, Ian E. Wilson, Mr. Corti and Ms. Teasdale’s two sisters who created the Lucille Teasdale and Piero Corti Foundation. Mr. Wilson will present the cheque for the amount of the purchase to the Foundation, which strives to ensure that the couple’s work lives on, to promote their example and to contribute financially to the operations of St. Mary’s-Lacor Hospital.

This event will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, October 10, 2000, at the Guy Favreau Complex, 200 René Lévesque Boulevard, 6th Floor West, Salle du Patrimoine 1 and 2, Montreal (Quebec). A selection of varied documents from this collection will be on display during this event.
