OTTAWA, November 27, 2002 - Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada, will present the insignia of Member of the Order of Canada to Ian E. Wilson, Canada's National Archivist, on November 30, 2002. The ceremony will take place at the Fort Garry Hotel, in Winnipeg. The Order of Canada is our country's highest honour for lifetime achievement.

Ian E. Wilson has had a distinguished career in archival and information management, university teaching and government service. He began his career at Queen's University Archives, after which he became Archivist of Saskatchewan, and later, Archivist of Ontario. He was appointed National Archivist in July 1999. In September 2000, Mr. Wilson was elected Vice-President of the International Council on Archives. He was awarded an Honourary Doctorate of Letters (DLitt) from York University, in 2001.

Ian E. Wilson has been involved with the Canadian archival community for more than 30 years and has worked diligently to make archives accessible and interesting to a wide range of audiences. He has published extensively and has lectured both nationally and abroad. The 1980 publication of Canadian Archives, known as the "Wilson Report," has been described as "a milestone in the history of archival development in Canada."

Since his appointment as National Archivist, Ian E. Wilson has raised public awareness on the importance of our National Archives. He is currently working on the creation of a new, world-class agency, the Library and Archives of Canada, which is built on the proud traditions of the National Archives of Canada and the National Library of Canada.

"The new institution," said Mr. Wilson, " will be a vital resource for all Canadians. Its collections will document the full complexity and diversity of the Canadian experience."
