Terms Governing the Reproduction and Use of Material from the Collection of Library and Archives Canada

Reproduction and Use

Library and Archives Canada (LAC) will provide paper and digital reproductions of material from its collection as long as the reproductions are used for research or private study purposes. Users can obtain reproductions of documents that are not subject to preservation restrictions, donor restrictions or privacy restrictions (see Access to Information and Privacy - More Details).

Should the user wish to use the reproductions for a purpose other than research or private study, permission from the copyright owner may be required. It is the user's responsibility to determine whether or not the material is protected by copyright, and if the use of the material constitutes an infringement of copyright under the Canadian Copyright Act (http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/c-42/text.html). If it does, written permission from the copyright owner(s) must be obtained. When LAC is not the copyright owner, we will provide the name of the copyright owner(s) if it is readily available.

Reproductions are provided for one-time use only. It is strictly prohibited to reproduce, resell or lend the reproduction, or to deposit it with another individual or repository. Any modification, translation or reformatting that alters the meaning or context of the material or compromises its authenticity is also strictly prohibited.

Citation

To ensure proper citation and facilitate retrieval of material, the source of the material and its reference number must always accompany the reproductions. For more information, see How to Cite Archival Sources.
