Canadian Genealogy Centre Room

Important Notice: Reopening of Library and Archives Canada Public Research Areas

The Canadian Genealogy Centre room is located on the 3rd floor.

  • Opening hours: 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
  • Reference service: 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, except statutory holidays

You will find:

  • research tools such as census indexes, atlases, reference books and finding aids
  • computers providing access to the Internet, collection catalogue and LAC genealogical databases
  • free wireless Internet access

The staff of the Canadian Genealogy Centre helps users make the most of the Library and Archives Canada (LAC) collection. They provide, for example:

  • the opportunity to consult with a professional
  • tips and advice on how to conduct genealogical research using different types of records and publications in various formats
  • help in using research tools
  • help in consulting specialized genealogical databases
  • referrals to other special LAC collections

It is possible to consult church indexes, census indexes, family histories and other types of publications from Library and Archives Canada's (LAC) collection through the interlibrary or inter-institutional loan service.

Reference Collection records must be consulted on-site at 395 Wellington Street in Ottawa. They cannot be borrowed through the interlibrary or inter-institutional loan service.
