Title: Flanders Fields : [background interview]
Stevens, Lester - 8th Battalion - Interview
Accession number:
1980-0123

Description:

Interview with J. Lester Stevens, a "signaler" with the 8th Canadian Infantry Battalion, who discusses his experiences in World War I. During his first battle experience at Neuve Chapelle, he remarked that he discarded four Ross rifles, "not one of them worth a damn." He also remembers the sight of red poppies blooming in the Belgian countryside. In the interview Stevens provides a detailed account of his experiences during the Second Battle of Ypres where he was gassed and eventually invalided to England. He recalls watching the Germans setting out canisters and "wondered what they were doing." Thinking it was just smoke, he tied his handkerchief around his face "which saved me." During the withdrawl of the Canadian troops from the frontlines at Ypres, Stevens recalls an incident that still angers him. He describes how they took refuge in a small building held by the British. Offered a place to sleep, the British insisted they had no blankets for the Canadians. However, the British "found" blankets for the German prisoners who later shared the makeshift sleeping quarters with the Canadians. Stevens concludes with his hospitalization for gas poisoning.
