The Rockies Through the Lens of Time

Presented by Library and Archives Canada in celebration of Alberta's centennial, this exhibition is built around dramatic images-mountains, passes and valleys-of Jasper and Waterton Lakes National Parks. Photographs taken in 1915 are compared with ones taken recently at the same sites. The photos reveal almost a century of change in the landscape of, interests in, and ideas about our national parks. The Rockies Through the Lens of Time includes a variety of complementary material and artifacts.

In celebration of Alberta's centennial, Library and Archives Canada is pleased to present this selection of photographs from the recently acquired Orest Semchishen fonds.
In the early 1970s, Edmonton radiologist Orest Semchishen began focusing his camera on the people and places of Alberta.
He photographed people from many walks of life and from all corners of the province. He photographed the young and the old, the rich and the poor, the employer and the employee, in their homes, workplaces, businesses and public spaces-people going about their daily lives and affecting the lives of others

Library and Archives Canada marks the Year of the Veteran by examining the Second World War from the perspective of the family, and seeing its most profound impact on Canada. Most families contributed to the war: nearly one in ten Canadians served in uniform between 1939 and 1945; millions more served in factories, on farms and in the merchant marine. It is their stories that are told through the archival documents on display in this exhibition.

Scoop! A Salute to 160 Years of the Ottawa Citizen

Scoop!, presented by the Ottawa Citizen and Library and Archives Canada, is an exhibition of the newspaper's memorabilia, photographs and illustrations. The exhibit also includes selected items from Library and Archives Canada's art, photography and manuscript collections, as well as some artifacts from the Canada Science and Technology Museum.
Scoop! will appeal to all who are interested in the history of print media and the National Capital Region.
The Fate of the Temples in Late Antique Egypt, Destruction or Recycling?

Was Late Antiquity (A.D. 4th to 6th century) a period of Christian violence against ancient temples? Archaeologist and papyrologist, Professor Jitse H.F. Dijkstra, University of Ottawa, will reconsider the closure of the famous temple of Isis at Philae, southern Egypt, and show that religious violence in Late Antiquity was more the exception than the rule.

The Shape of the Future

The Shape of the Future is a two-part documentary series that attempts to find the common ground between Israelis and Palestinians. The series was broadcast in Israel, the Palestinian territories as well as on Al-Jazeera network with very positive reviews. This event is sponsored by Potlucks for Peace, a dialogue group for Arabs and Jews in the Ottawa area. On January 18, John Marks, the producer, will discuss its production. On January 25, Ed Broadbent will moderate a panel discussion of Arabs and Jews. The two parts can be seen independent of one another. Middle Eastern refreshments will be available for sale at the events. In English.

Breaking Down Solitudes: Celebrating Our North Star Legacy

In celebration of Black History Month, the J'Nikira Dinqinesh Education Centre and Library and Archives Canada present Breaking Down Solitudes: Celebrating Our North Star Legacy, commemorating the pioneers of our culture of human rights and honouring present-day Legacy Keepers.
The evening will feature Legacy Keepers Lieutenant-General, the Honourable Roméo A. Dallaire, (Ret'd), Senator, former Commander of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda and the Honourable Dr. Irwin Cotler, who served as international human rights lawyer for Nelson Mandela of South Africa and international legal counsel to Nigerian playwright and Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, and others.
The evening, hosted by Ian E. Wilson, Librarian and Archivist of Canada, will pay tribute to the First Nations and Canadian citizens of Japanese ancestry, with Drums of Nations.
Reception to follow in the auditorium foyer.
Presentations in English with simultaneous translation.
