5. Returning borrowed items to the National Library

Libraries returning borrowed items from the National Library should be sure to enclose the retrieval slips with the items when returning them. These slips are attached by the National Library of Canada to the items when they are sent out on loan, and it is useful for our processing if they are still attached when the items are returned.

Libraries borrowing through interlibrary loan from the National Library's collections assume responsibility for the safety and good condition of the borrowed materials from the time the material is charged out until it is returned to the National Library. These materials should be returned in adequate protective packing.

In some instances the material loaned is restricted for use on the premises of the borrowing library. It is the borrowing library's responsibility to ensure that restrictions are followed.

Borrowers are responsible for replacing lost items or for paying a charge for lost items. When one volume of a multi-volume set is lost, the complete set should be replaced if the unique volume cannot be procured.
