Banner: Inventory of Canadian Digital Initiatives

Scope of Database

The Inventory provides links to, and brief information about Digital Initiatives that create Web-accessible Canadian resources. Submissions from public, private, and non-profit organizations as well as from individuals are welcome. Submissions for Web-accessible resources created outside Canada that deal with Canadian topics are encouraged.

Projects can be currently underway, in planning, or already completed. The Inventory includes digital collections, resources centred around a particular theme, and reference tools that include indexes, subject directories of organized links to other Web resources, and databases.

Current electronic publishing is covered by Canada's national bibliography, Canadiana. Please refer to Note under Exclusions.

The following Digital Initiatives are included:
  • digitization projects (i.e., projects to convert substantial collections of books, manuscripts, articles, files, unique reference tools / finding aids / indexes, photographs, illustrations, maps, sound recordings, video, 3-D objects, etc., to digital versions for Web access);
  • creation of original, completely new resources that did not previously exist (e.g., a virtual exhibition);
  • reference sources and databases that include organized, annotated subject directories with links to Web resources such as the Toronto Public Library's Virtual Reference Library or the Canadian Information by Subject Web site
The Digital Initiative should be significant or substantial, either in terms of the importance or unique nature of the content, or in terms of the amount of material digitized or produced.

To help avoid duplication with other inventories and directories, the following kinds of projects or Digital Initiatives are excluded:
  • current publishing, such as publishing books, reports or magazines on the Web;

    Note: Current publishing is covered by Canada's national bibliography, Canadiana. If you publish new Canadian monograph or serial electronic publications and make them available on the Internet, we would appreciate hearing from you. Please send us an e-mail epe@lac-bac.gc.ca with the URL, title, editor's name, e-mail address and any other information available.
  • home pages and on-line public access catalogues (OPACs) of libraries and other organizations (these are found in other directories); this includes simple Web sites noting institutional hours of service, locations, services available, publicity, etc.;
  • "white-page" directories, such as alphabetical directories of names and addresses;
  • systems' projects aimed at developing or implementing software, hardware, or telecommunications;
  • projects that do not involve content creation, such as obtaining institutional or consortial licences for electronic publications, or providing licensed access to commercial electronic periodicals;
  • electronic resources (e.g., CD-ROMs) that will not be available via the Web;
  • research projects that will not produce electronic resources.

If in doubt as to whether or not to submit an entry, or if you have any questions, please contact us initiatives@lac-bac.gc.ca!
