The Naskapi Lexicon database provides users with access to a trilingual dictionary, with translations of terms into Naskapi, English and French. A unique feature of this project, developed in partnership with the Naskapi Development Corporation (NDC), is the use of UNICODE for the display and input of Aboriginal syllabics.

Acknowledgments

The National Library of Canada gratefully acknowledges the invaluable partnership of the Naskapi Development Corporation from the Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach.

The Naskapi Development Corporation (NDC), incorporated in June 1979, has among its objectives the preservation of the Naskapi language. Since 1979, the corporation has been working on establishing standards for writing Naskapi. In 1994, the corporation published the Naskapi Lexicon, the first official trilingual lexicon of the Naskapi language. For more information about this publication, see History of the Project.

We are also grateful to Bill Jancewicz, Kawawachikamach's resident Naskapi linguist, who provided invaluable assistance in developing this site. Bill was assisted by Joseph Guanish, Silas Nabinicaboo, Phil Einish and Alma Chemaganish. Marguerite MacKenzie, Jill Perry and Doug Vincent were also involved in preparing and editing the Naskapi lexicon database.

We also gratefully acknowledge the financial assistance of the Department of Canadian Heritage, whose Canadian Cultural Online Program (CCOP) made this work possible.
