Graphical element
Graphical element Description
Graphical element Graphical element This watercolour sketch shows a Black man sawing a log at Shelburne, Nova Scotia in 1788. American Loyalists began arriving in 1783, along with Black Loyalists who were allotted land on the northwest arm of Shelburne harbour. They founded Birchtown, once the largest free Black settlement on the continent. Some of the Black settlers were freed slaves, some had bought their freedom, some were born free, and others were indentured servants and slaves to White Loyalists. Some of the Black settlers had served the Loyalist cause and sought equality under British protection. While most indentured servants and slaves settled in Shelburne, free Black settlers lived in nearby Birchtown, named after the man who signed their certificates of freedom.
