Graphical element Description
Graphical element Graphical element In this letter, C.J. Brydges (1827-?) refers to George-Étienne Cartier’s interest in Confederation. C.J. Brydges was the managing director of The Grand Trunk Railway Company of Canada. George-Étienne Cartier (1814-1873) was a lawyer, railway promoter, politician, prime minister of the Province of Canada and Father of Confederation. Cartier was involved in the development of the Grand Trunk Railway as its solicitor. The Grand Trunk Railway Company of Canada was founded in 1852 and was sponsored by Sir Francis Hicks, a prominent politician and member of the Reform Party. The Grand Trunk Railway’s goal was to link the Maritime provinces with Upper and Lower Canada. The company employed tens of thousands of workers and eventually took over its rival company, The Great Western Railway of Canada. In 1882 it expanded to become the largest railway line in the world.
