Graphical element Graphical element Sir George-Étienne Cartier (1814-1873) was born in St-Antoine, Lower Canada into a wealthy family of grain exporters. He was a lawyer, railway promoter, politician and prime minister of the Province of Canada. He fought during the Lower Canada rebellions of 1837 and was forced into exile in Vermont for a year. He ran as a Liberal Reformer in 1848. Cartier created a coalition with Conservatives from Canada West and served as co-premier with John A. Macdonald (1815-1891) in the Union parliaments of 1857-58 and 1858-62. He was also heavily involved in the development of the Grand Trunk Railway and the building of the Intercolonial Railway, of which Montréal would be a major terminus.
