IntroductionThe value of Canadian newspapers as a source of information on the history of this nation and as a reflection of its life is indisputable. The contents of these newspapers, however, may be difficult to access. Due to the cost associated with scanning large quantities of newsprint and full content retrospective indexing, many institutions and individuals have chosen to index only set dates and certain types of key information such as birth, marriage and death notices. The Checklist of Indexes to Canadian Newspapers held by Library and Archives Canada comprises indexes to Canadian newspaper titles received by the Library's Reference Collection. The coverage of these indexes span from the 18th century to the present date. The Checklist also provides online and Internet sources for indexes to Canadian newspapers. Many of the titles in the Checklist are available from Library and Archives Canada on interlibrary loan. The Checklist will be updated as the Library acquires additional indexes. If you know of published indexes not listed here, or if you would like to request a search of any of these indexes, please contact the Library's Reference Services by electronic mail at reference@lac-bac.gc.ca. Enquiries may also be submitted by letter, facsimile or telephone. Reference Services |
