Graphical element Graphical element The sea voyage from France to New France was usually long and arduous. In her letters, Marie de l’Incarnation (1599-1672), founder of the Ursuline order of Québec, described the hardships and hazards of an Atlantic crossing. She told of pirates boarding ships leaving the French ports, dangerous storms and bad weather that affected passengers’ health and caused shipwrecks.
