Jacob Mountain, 1778, by John Downman

Jacob Mountain, born in Norfolk, England, in 1749, was named Quebec's first Anglican bishop in July 1793. Determined to establish the Anglican Church in Upper and Lower Canada (Ontario and Quebec), Bishop Mountain had to contend with an entrenched French-language Catholic Church as well as with "dissident" churches, mostly Presbyterian, already established in the colonies.

John Downman (1750-1824), an associate of the London Royal Academy since 1795, painted portraits of many British aristocrats of the time.
