Map of the world, 1565, by Paolo Forlani

Engraved in Venice by Forlani in 1565, this is the first printed map on which the name "Canada" appears.

Labrador, Newfoundland, the Saguenay, Cape Breton and Stadacone (Québec) are shown in a confusing combination. These names are based on the tales of the French explorer Jacques Cartier and Giambattista Ramusio, a 16th century Italian editor and compiler remembered for Delle navigationi e viaggi (1550-1559), a monumental collection of geographical accounts of exploration.

Because of its fine lines, tasteful decoration and clear inscriptions, this map is an excellent illustration of 16th-century Italian engravers' art.
