Medal of Louis XIV marking the Treaty of Utrecht, April 1713

The fate of the North American colonies rested with the outcome of wars waged in Europe during the early 1700s.

The Treaty of Utrecht ended the War of the Spanish Succession in Europe and settled a number of disputes between England and France. France kept Île St.-Jean ( Prince Edward Island) and Île Royale (Cape Breton). France ceded Nova Scotia (also called Acadia), Newfoundland, Hudson Bay and Hudson Strait to England. The Treaty essentially ended French expansion in North America.
