The 1885 Campaign was fought in a time of transition from the pen-and-ink sketch and watercolour school of visual reporting of military events, with all its attendant bias and glorification of war, to the photographic report with more subtle but equally strong biases. The illustrated war news represents the older approach. Peter Robertson, in Relentless verity, and with Owen Cooke in "James Peters, military photography and the Northwest Campaign, 1885," has selected some of the best of Captain James Peters' photographs. In the 1885 Campaign, Peters was probably the first photographer in the world to record men in action under fire and demonstrate the rapidly evolving new conditions of warfare. J.A. Foster's Muskets to missiles provides examples of each approach, but the captions are unimaginative and sometimes erroneous.
