IntroductionIn 1891, two men from a place called Galicia stepped onto the pier in Montréal. Wasyl Elyniak and Ivan Pylipiw were the first of a huge wave of Ukrainians to emigrate to Canada before 1914. Like so many others, they travelled to western Canada. Why did they leave their homelands? Why did they settle in the Canadian West? What challenges did they face? How did they survive and build communities in this new land? Today, more than 1,000,000 Canadians can claim some Ukrainian heritage. They live in various parts of Canada, work in many professions, and make all kinds of contributions to our communities. Let's meet the "pioneer" generation of Ukrainians that included Elyniak and Pulipiw, and learn about the three other waves of Ukrainian immigrants that followed them.
