Introduction

Although Black people have come to Canada from many different countries, they all have one thing in common: all Black people have ancestors that came from Africa. The earliest Africans came as explorers to the New World. Later on, many African Americans came to this land from the United States to escape slavery. Some of these people were soldiers who had fought for Britain and were promised the reward of freedom and land. There were also African Americans who were free who chose to come to British North America (now Canada) in order to escape discrimination and the threat of slavery, and to take advantage of the cheap land being offered. Though they had many different reasons for coming to British North America, they all shared the hope of finding a better life.

Today, Black people from many different countries live in all of Canada's provinces and territories.
