Transportation

Information on air and surface transportation, including the City of Ottawa bus service. Delegates are asked to make their own travel arrangements.

- Transportation by Air

Air Canada - Call Air Canada's North American toll-free number, 1- 800-361-7585, or contact your travel agent.

The Airport Shuttle Bus service departs every 30 minutes from the Macdonald-Cartier International Airport to downtown Ottawa, from 5:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. daily. Call 613-998-4017 for the most up-to-date schedule and rates. Taxi service is also available from the airport and all downtown hotels. In addition, most major car rental companies have outlets at the airport.

Note that VIA Rail Canada Inc. is the official ground transportation carrier for the Forum and is offering delegates a special conference fare.

The special fare is valid from September 24 to 30, 2005, for delegates traveling on VIA Rail across Canada to and from Ottawa, Ontario. VIA Rail is offering a 35% discount off the full adult economy class fare, with a minimum fare of $15.00 CDN and 5% off the full adult VIA-1 first class and/or sleeper class. Delegates are restricted to a maximum of two fares per person.

Delegates must make verbal reference to a special promotion number assigned to the Forum. To request this number, please contact Cindy Hick by telephone at 613-726-7111 or by e-mail at hick@bellnet.ca. Your registration confirmation will be required to pick up the tickets.

Delegates must make their reservations by contacting VIA Rail online at www.viarail.ca/en_index.html or by calling 1-888-VIA RAIL (842-7245). Reservations may also be made through a travel agent.

The bus station is located on Catherine Street near the Kent Street exit from Highway 417 (Queensway), close to the downtown area.

OC Transpo is the name of Ottawa's public transportation system and city buses are available from both the Ottawa train and bus station as well as the airport.

General Information for Travellers

Important Information on Passports and Visas
A valid passport is required for entry into Canada. Citizens of certain countries may require a visitor visa for entry into Canada. Before finalizing your plans, be sure to check the requirements that apply to you with your travel agent or the Canadian embassy or consulate.

Insurance
Neither the organizers nor Library and Archives Canada are able to take responsibility for injury or damage to persons or properties during the conference. Participants are therefore kindly requested to take out their own insurance.

Banks
Most banks are open from Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. They offer 24-hour cash machines (ATMs) that are available seven days a week.

Climate and Clothing
September is autumn in the National Capital Region and average temperatures range from 9 to 20 C, with an average temperature of 14 C. As evenings and nights may be cool, we recommend that you bring a sweater, an overcoat or raincoat and an umbrella.

Smoking
On August 1, 2001, the City of Ottawa passed a by-law banning smoking in all public places.
